What might denials be costing your practice?

Put in your own numbers for a rough yearly estimate. It takes about a minute, and we won't ask for your email.

A sample remittance advice with one claim highlighted, denied with code CO-16 and remark code N285, and a handwritten note to send a corrected claim before the appeal window closes.

We picked these starting values at random. Replace them with your own numbers from your EHR's denial and A/R reports.

Estimated charges not recovered per year

Denied per month
Not recovered per month

This uses charges, which overstates the cash at stake. An audit would use your contracted rates.

Questions

Where to find these numbers

Where do I find my denial rate?

Most EHR and practice management systems have a denial report. Divide the charges denied at first submission by total charges submitted for the same period.

How do I estimate how many denials are never recovered?

Compare denied charges with how much of that amount got paid later. If you can't get that report, that's worth knowing too.

Why does this show charges rather than cash?

Charges are easy to find, but your contracted rate is usually lower. So treat this as a rough upper estimate. An audit would give you a more realistic number.
